ATAA reduction in allocated tyre sets from the standard 13 to 11, referred to as the Alternative Tyre Allocation (ATA), was trialled during Hungarian and Italian Grands Prix, with the intention of making tyre usage more sustainable. The usage of tyre compounds during qualifying was mandated as hard in Q1, medium in Q2 and soft in Q3, assuming that the weather is dry.

2023 DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award

The DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award was established in 2015 to recognize outstanding teamwork and performance from the unsung heroes who make a vital contribution to the drivers’ success on the track.
Prior to 2016, the winner was determined by the number of first place finishes, but since 2017, the winner has been determined by the points system.

* 2023 fastest pit stop record is 1.80 seconds, set by McLaren F1 Team in Qatar GP – Round 18. And this is the world record.

McLaren break the world record – and the hearts of Red Bull

In a race of 54 pit stops, the McLaren pit crew came out on top. The Woking-based outfit may not have been able to catch Max Verstappen on the track, but in the pit lane they were more than a match for Red Bull. A double FPS podium and a new world record time. Not a bad weekend to be driving a Papaya-colored car. Unless your name happens to be Lando Norris…

McLaren are currently on the crest of a wave. Oscar Piastri followed up his first sprint race win on Saturday with P2 on Sunday. Meanwhile, Lando Norris had to look on as his rookie team-mate outperformed him for the fourth time in a row (2x qualifying, 2x race).

Norris didn’t even get the chance to attack, as he was under team orders from team principal Andrea Stella: “Stay away from the curbs , watch out for the track limits, do the simple things right and make sure of the podium.” Lando Norris was not best pleased: “I could have fought for two poles and two race wins. I know the winning potential of the car.”

Track limit transgressions and lapses of concentration in qualifying were what frustrated Lando Norris’s ambitions this weekend. He started both the sprint and main race at a disadvantage, immediately falling back from P2 to P6 on Saturday, and qualifying only tenth for Sunday. With both Mercedes drivers colliding and one retiring, a podium was a must in Doha. “The pace was better than expected, and at one point we were even faster than Max,” said Norris with some degree of disappointment.

McLaren benefited from the restriction introduced at short notice on the Pirelli tires: a maximum of 18 laps on a single set and a mandatory three-stop strategy. That worked out well for McLaren. On the one hand, it neutralized the RB19’s tire wear advantage, and on the other hand, it allowed the mechanics to shine in the pit lane. Of the five fastest pit stops clocked on Sunday, four were performed by the McLaren mechanics.

Not only that: The 1.80-second stop for Lando Norris on lap 27 broke what was thought to be an insurmountable pit stop “sound barrier” and set a new world record – faster than Red Bull in Brazil 2019 (1.82 seconds). And this despite the fact that the new 18-inch tires introduced in 2022 have made it much harder to chase times in the pit lane. Actually, we normally look to Red Bull for record-breaking achievements (see Max Verstappen). Marc Webber’s 2.05-second stop by Red Bull in Malaysia in 2013 was immediately surpassed in Austin the same year by a time of 1.923 seconds (also Webber). Three years later, Williams sent Felipe Massa on his way in Baku after just 1.92 seconds.

2019 then became the year of pit stop records for Red Bull: Pierre Gasly 1.91 at Silverstone, Max Verstappen 1.88 at the Hockenheimring, and finally the crowning achievement in Brazil with 1.82 seconds. For a long time, people thought no team could go any faster. But then along came McLaren.
